Exponential Lower Bounds for History-Based Simplex Pivot Rules on Abstract Cubes
نویسنده
چکیده
The behavior of the simplex algorithm is a widely studied subject. Specifically, the question of the existence of a polynomial pivot rule for the simplex algorithm is of major importance. Here, we give exponential lower bounds for three history-based pivot rules. Those rules decide their next step based on memory of the past steps. In particular, we study Zadeh’s least entered rule, Johnson’s least-recently basic rule and Cunningham’s least-recently considered (or round-robin) rule. We give exponential lower bounds on Acyclic Unique Sink Orientations (AUSO) of the abstract cube, for all of these pivot rules. For Johnson’s rule our bound is the first superpolynomial one in any context; for Zadeh’s it is the first one for AUSO. Those two are our main results.

متن کاملLinear Programming, the Simplex Algorithm and Simple Polytopes
In the first part of the paper we survey some far reaching applications of the basis facts of linear programming to the combinatorial theory of simple polytopes. In the second part we discuss some recent developments concurring the simplex algorithm. We describe sub-exponential randomized pivot roles and upper bounds on the diameter of graphs of polytopes.
متن کاملTwo New Bounds on the Random-Edge Simplex Algorithm
We prove that the Random-Edge simplex algorithm requires an expected number of at most 13n/ √ d pivot steps on any simple d-polytope with n vertices. This is the first nontrivial upper bound for general polytopes. We also describe a refined analysis that potentially yields much better bounds for specific classes of polytopes. As one application, we show that for combinatorial d-cubes, the trivi...
متن کاملAn exponential lower bound for Cunningham's rule
In this paper we give an exponential lower bound for Cunningham’s least recently considered (round-robin) rule as applied to parity games, Markhov decision processes and linear programs. This improves a recent subexponential bound of Friedmann for this rule on these problems. The round-robin rule fixes a cyclical order of the variables and chooses the next pivot variable starting from the previ...
